Functions
The Livingston County Engineer, under the direction of the
County Board, creates budgets, plans, specifications and
bidding documents for improving or maintaining the County
Highway (CH) system. Various projects handled by the
department staff include bridge replacements, hot-mix
overlays, sealcoat, shoulder disking, ditch grading, culvert
replacements, sign repairs, spray patching and mowing along
County Highways. We also complete snow removal along our
jurisdiction which consists of 257 miles. Livingston County is
the fourth largest in Illinois at 1,044 square miles and in
addition to the County roads, the Highway Department helps
plan and coordinate work for the 30 area Townships with their
collective 1,610 miles of roadway.
Additional Responsibilities
Livingston County has 72 bridges along the CH System and
the Townships have 388 bridges over 20 feet in length that
the department inspects biannually. The department
supervises the design and replacement of 3–6 bridges each
year. We also design and construct joint township and village
culvert projects. The department also provides engineering
services and administers the 30 Townships’ Motor Fuel Tax
and Township Bridge Program funds.
