Expectations for Jury Duty:
On the initial day of service, parking passes will be handed out to all participants. It is permissible to dress casually during this time. Additionally, complimentary donuts and coffee will be provided for your convenience. Feel free to bring along your cell phones, tablets, or books as there will be ample downtime. WIFI will be accessible for your convenience. As for compensation, jurors will receive $15.00 per day of service, along with an additional $0.30 per mile traveled.
The jury is selected from a group of:
- Eligible voters
- Individuals who possess an Illinois driver’s license or Illinois Identification Card
- Disability Identification Card holders
- Claimants for unemployment insurance of the county
The jurors must meet the following criteria:
- Reside in the county
- 18 years or older
- Free from all legal exception
- Able to understand the English language, whether spoken, written, or interpreted through sign language
- Citizens of the United States of America
The Jury Commission Clerk will issue summons for petit jury service from a pool of approximately 1,000 qualified jurors. These summons must be issued no later than 20 days prior to the commencement of jury service and within 5 days of the drawing.
When employees are summoned for jury duty, it is mandatory for their employers to grant them time off to fulfill their duties as jurors. Additionally, employees are required to provide their employers with reasonable notice regarding their jury service.
In order to be excused from jury service due to a total and permanent disability, a written letter from a licensed physician must be completed. This letter should clearly state that the prospective juror has a total and permanent disability, provide a brief description of the disability, explain how it hinders the prospective juror from serving as a juror, and confirm that the prospective juror will never be able to serve as a juror. Please refer to the Disability Letter located below for further guidance.
Failure to appear in court will result in being deemed guilty of contempt, potentially leading to fines imposed by the court.
